Musannah to host World Beach Handball event

BASEL (Switzerland) The International Handball Federation (IHF) on Tuesday officially announced that the fifth men’s and women’s Beach Handball World Championship will be held in the Sultanate from July 8 to 13 on the beaches of Al Musannah Sports City.

National teams from 24 countries will be participating in the championship.

The agreement was signed by Said Bin Salim Al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Handball Association (OHA) and Dr Hassan Moustafa, Chairman of IHF.

The two sides held talks and discussions to review the preparations for hosting the event. Hassan Moustafa listened to a detailed description from the officials of the Oman Handball Association about what has been achieved and prepared for the championship so far.

Said Al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Handball Association, thanked His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said for the generous support paid to sports and athletes in the Sultanate.

Said Al Busaidi, after the signing ceremony, expressed his happiness of taking the honour of hosting an international event in the Sultanate as he hopped that the championship would help achieve the sports, economic and tourism goals of the nation.

Said Al Busaidi also thanked HE Sheikh, Sa’ad Bin Mohammed Al Sa’adi, Minister of Sports Affairs. He also thanked HE Eng. Ali Bin Masoud Al Sunaidy the former Minister of Sports Affairs.

Hassan asserted the federation has great trust in the Sultanate to host the World Beach Handball (men and women) Championship 2012. He also thanked the Ministry of Sports Affairs and the Omani Olympic Committee.

Earlier HE Rashad Bin Ahmed Al Hinai, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Sports Affairs, met an international handball expert, who was on a visit to the country to oversee the Sultanate’s preparations to host the World Cup Beach Handball from July 8 to 13.

George Babassato, technical expert and a representative of the International Handball Federation (IHF), was received by Al Hinai at his office.

Al Hinai praised IHF’s support to the Sultanate and thanked the body for choosing the country to host the finals of the World Cup.

The IHF official expressed satisfaction with the Sultanate’s preparations, said that Oman have the organisational, logistics, technical, and security aspects in hosting the event.

He said the IHF is fully prepared to provide aid and assistance to the organising committees and the sports officials in the Sultanate

Oman will be competing for the second time after it was invited to participate and mark its debut in Antalya, Turkey in 2010.

Last year, the national team qualified by finishing runner-up at the Asian championship.
